The Oxford Bus Company operates a comprehensive network of services in Oxford with a fleet of 170 coaches and buses. Notably, they run the lowest emission bus fleet of its size in the UK, with over half of their local bus fleet now consisting of fully electric buses. This commitment makes them one of the greenest bus companies in the country. However, as their fleet of electric vehicles expanded, they faced a significant challenge. The company's vehicle technicians needed training in the repair and maintenance of these advanced vehicles to ensure their smooth operation and safety. This led The Oxford Bus Company to seek the expertise of Autotech Training, known for delivering high-quality training directly at business premises.
THE AUTOTECH TRAINING SOLUTION
Autotech Training responded to the call by providing IMI Level 2 and 3 Heavy Vehicle Electric/Hybrid courses tailored for the Oxford Bus Company's technicians. Over three intensive days, skilled trainers from Autotech Training delivered the curriculum on-site at Oxford's garage. This immersive approach allowed technicians to apply theoretical knowledge directly to the vehicles they would be maintaining. The training was meticulously designed to equip the technicians with the necessary skills and knowledge to work safely on heavy electric and hybrid vehicles.
This included operational and repair activities, such as replacing components on vehicles that might have sustained damage to their high-energy electrical systems. One of the main challenges was minimising business disruption due to time constraints and the necessity of having several technicians out for training. Autotech Training's flexible approach addressed this by conducting the sessions on-premises, thus saving time and reducing the investment required for off-site training. This on-location training proved highly effective, as it enabled technicians to gain hands-on experience with the exact vehicles they would be working on.
The successful completion of the training means that The Oxford Bus Company's technicians are now qualified to safely handle and maintain electric vehicle components, supporting the company's transition towards more sustainable transport solutions.
