TRAINING THE TRAINERS TO SUPPORT YOUNG PEOPLE
Northumbria Youth Action (NYA) is committed to advancing the education and training of young people under 25 who are keen to promote their own employment prospects in motor vehicle and hairdressing. With a fully operational garage on its site, NYA delivers Motor Vehicle courses to students who are looking to pursue a career as a vehicle technician. The training site is also used by technicians currently working within the industry who are looking to up-skill.
Faced with the inevitable roll out of electric vehicles, NYA were keen to ensure that their trainers held the necessary qualifications to teach students and young adult learners when required. “Training on electric vehicles is not currently part of the curriculum,” explains Mike Johnson, Business Manager for Northumbria Youth Action. “However, we were keen to ensure our trainers held the necessary qualifications to be able to teach our students, and young adult learners, the skills needed to service electric vehicles safely as they will inevitably come into contact with them.”
The course was informative and extremely enjoyable. While equipping the trainers with the relevant qualifications, it has increased their confidence around electric vehicles. While demand for work on electric/hybrid vehicles is not particularly high right now, we are aware that this is likely to increase in the near future.
As an organisation committed to helping young people up-skill and forge a career path within the motor industry, we want to ensure that our trainers hold the necessary skill set to teach our students the qualifications which will become a requirement in the future.
