The DVSA recently revealed that over half of MOT testers are yet to complete their 2022/23 annual training and assessment. That’s 36,000 of the UK’s 64,652 MOT testers who, if they don’t complete the mandatory training requirements by 31st March, will be immediately suspended from testing.
The DVSA requires a pass rate of 80% so, as an MOT tester, you need to ensure that you complete your training as soon as possible to allow time for any retakes.
There are no extensions to the deadline. If you fail to pass the MOT Annual Assessment by midnight on Friday 31st March, you will be immediately suspended. This means that you will be unable to conduct any MOT work from the 1st April onwards until you have completed next years’ training and assessment, then scheduled and completed a “demonstration test” with a DVSA representative at your place of work. In short, failing to pass the Annual Assessment in time could have serious consequences on your career and income, not to mention road safety.
We know that, faced with a shortage of skills, MOT testing sites are often working to capacity. As a result, finding the time can be challenging and it’s tempting to think, ‘I’ll do it tomorrow.’ You may, along with many testers, also be anxious about taking an academic exam, particularly with a high pass rate. However, as with anything, leaving something to the last minute only adds to the pressure. It begs the question why do so many testers put themselves through this every year?
While the whole R.A.G rating algorithm is difficult to interpret due to the number of variables involved, it does appear to be weighted heavily towards the individual testers. While MOT testers don’t need to share their personal RAG score, it is vital that you do everything in your power to ensure this rating is positive – which includes carrying out the annual MOT training and assessment ahead of time, as the DVSA rates those who have completed their assessment earlier more positively.
Once you start it really won’t take long. A vital part of continuous improvement to maintain high quality MOTs, the assessment includes at least three hours of training, which can be completed individually, in a group, or on a course with a training provider. The assessment itself can just take an hour.
Autotech Training’s annual MOT training syllabus, supported by the IMI, has been developed to the highest standard and covers all topics and hours required by DVSA to enable you to learn and develop your MOT testing theory - and stay an approved tester.
For just £64.99+VAT, both the training and assessment can be completed online at your own pace or, for just £149.99 +VAT you could join others within Autotech Training’s Milton Keynes training facility which is hosted by an MOT specialist trainer.
The annual training follows the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) model allowing you to update your skills each year in manageable ‘bite-sized’ chunks. However, it is important that you remember to keep a log of your CPD each year. Both of Autotech Training’s on-line and in person training and assessment offers are the only packages on the market to offer secure, password-protected 12-month online storage of training materials, documents and certificates amassed over an MOT tester’s career.
